A Refresher on African American History




The history of Black artists in the United States cannot be separated from the broader history of racial exclusion, segregation, and unequal access to cultural institutions. For much of American history, Black artists faced barriers to formal training, gallery representation, collecting institutions, and museum acquisition. These historical conditions shaped not only who was recognized during their lifetime, but also when — or if — their work entered major museum collections.
